The S.A.M.R. were formed on 1 April 1913 from the existing Permanent and Police Forces of the South African provinces. The last regiment was disbanded in 1926. 1st Regiment - from Cape Mounted Riflemen 2nd Regiment - from Natal Police and O.F.S. Police 3rd Regiment - from Natal Police 4th Regiment - from Transvaal Police 5th Regiment - from Cape Mounted Police.
