1st (London) Motor Division mobilised at the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.
It was reorganised as an infantry division in June 1940 and renamed the 56th (London) Infantry Division on 18 November 1940.
This unit's emblem was Mayor of London Dick Whittington's cat. Nickname: "The Black Cat Division.
Formed as a Territorial Army Motor Division in September 1939, it was later reorganised as an infantry division in June 1940.
On 18 November of that year the formation was redesignated as 56th (London) Division under the command of Major-General Eric Miles.
Reformed in 1947 as an armoured division, changing its patch to a black cat inside a red circle on a blue background.
Reverted to an infantry unit in 1956 before being permanently disbanded in 1961.
The 56th Division fought in significant campaigns during World War II, including the Allied invasion of Italy (Salerno and Anzio) and the battle for Monte Cassino.
From 1948, 56th (London) Armoured Division wore a blue knight's helmet superimposed on the upright red sword, but in 1951 to 1961 it resumed the black cat, now with the red sword superimposed.
