Worcester is a city in central Massachusetts.
The first peace officer in the area was an Indian constable named Matoonus from the Nipmuck tribe, appointed around 1674.
Town Watch: Early law enforcement primarily consisted of a night watch and appointed constables. the town grew; the police system became more organized.
The city established "day police" and "night police" led by a City Marshal, a title later changed to Chief of Police.
