The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) is the municipal law enforcement agency of the City and County of San Francisco, as well as San Francisco International Airport in San Mateo County.
The San Francisco Police Department began operations on 13 August 1849, during the California gold rush.
In 1997, the San Francisco International Airport Police merged with the San Francisco Police Department, becoming the SFPD Airport Bureau.
The San Francisco Police Department uniform originally had no patch.
It was not until 1969 that the patch, incorporating the San Francisco crest of arms, phoenix and city motto was added to the uniform in 1970, adorning both sleeves.
Motto: “Oro en Paz, Fierro en Guerra” = “Gold in Peace, Iron in War”.
