The United States Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is the primary investigative law enforcement agency of the U.S. Department of the Navy.
Its primary function is to investigate major criminal activities involving the Navy and Marine Corps, though its broad mandate includes national security, counterintelligence, counterterrorism, cyberwarfare, and the protection of U.S. naval assets worldwide.

NCIS traces its origins to the establishment of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) in 1882.
In February 1966 the Naval Investigative Service (NIS) was established.
On 15 November 1985 NIS was re-designated as the Naval Security and Investigative Command (NSIC).
On 27 September 1988 NSIC was changed to the Naval Investigative Service Command (NISC).
In 1993 the name changed from Naval Investigative Service Command to Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS).
