In 1961 South Africa became a Republic.
In about 1986 the South African Police adopted the grey field dress uniforms with light blue shirts.
About 1991 the shirts for the Riot Units were changed to grey as well.
It was later changed for all SAP members.
In 1994 after the election the South African Police Force (SAP) was abolished, and the South African Police Services (SAPS) were created but keeping all former force members.
The former Homeland Police forces were also amalgamated into the new SAPS.
