The Canadian Forces Military Police (CFMP) or Groupe de la Police Militaire des Forces Canadiennes (PMFC) provide police, security and operational support services to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Department of National Defence (DND) worldwide.
On 1 February 1968 the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, and Royal Canadian Air Force were merged to form the Canadian Armed Forces.
Upon the formation of the unified Canadian Armed Forces the Police and Intelligence units of the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force were amalgamated into the Canadian Armed Forces Security and Intelligence Branch.
New insignia, Branch Colours and a Branch March were approved.
In the 1980's the Intelligence part of the Branch separated to become its own service. The policing portion of the Branch was renamed the Security and Military Police Branch.
In 1999, the Branch was renamed again and designated the Military Police Branch.
Badge description (approved in 1972 by the Queen): Within a garland of Maple Leaves or, a cartouche argent edged or charged with a Thunderbird Proper (in West Coast First Nations style), affront head turned to dexter, beneath the cartouche a motto ribbon or, the whole ensigned by Royal Crown Proper.
Symbolism: In the mythology of the First Nations of the West Coast, the thunderbird is a symbol of supremacy and power. It is also a protective spirit, one who gives wise counsel and guards the community against evil and misfortune. The black background symbolizes authority.
Motto: Blazon - DISCIPLINARE PER EXEMPLUM. This Latin phrase means “To discipline by example”.
