The 1 Engineer Support Unit (1 ESU) is a unit of the Canadian Forces Joint Operational Support Group (CFJOSG) based in Kingston, Ontario.
On 1 April 2003, 1 Construction Engineering Unit (1 CEU) restructured to its current form and was renamed 1 Engineer Support Unit.
However, its origin dates back to 1942. The Unit is a direct descendant of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Construction and Maintenance Units (CMUs). The need for such units arose from the many problems associated with the rapidly expanding and ever-changing construction and maintenance requirements brought on by World War II.
1 ESU functions much like a combined engineering consulting firm and construction management company that can operate in a permissive or hostile environment.
While it provides technical engineering expertise to the CAF and OGDs, its personnel can deploy and implement infrastructure projects anywhere around the world.
The unit is like a consulting engineering firm, conducting infrastructure, environment and force protection engineering studies, design and project management that cannot be completed by contracted of departmental agencies.
The numeral “1” in red with gold trim, overlaid with the image of a beaver which together sits above a blue, red, and gold ribbon displaying the unit motto “USQUAM” (anywhere).
