Formation Patch – Tasmania Command.
The badge, for wear on the left-hand sleeve, is a khaki square overlaid with a brown bordered yellow shield. Within the shield is a red rampant lion facing to the left, this being the state badge of Tasmania as it appears in the sixth segment of the Australian Coat-of-Arms.
Insignia for the various commands were generally taken from the badges of the states, as portrayed on the Australian Coat-of-Arms, Tasmanian Command using that of its home state.
In March 1939 a regional command structure was adopted, with 2nd Military District becoming Eastern Command and the 5th Military District was redesignated Western Command, while the 1st Military District in Queensland became Northern Command, and the three southern districts, the 3rd, 4th and 6th Military Districts in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, were amalgamated into Southern Command.
Early in 1942 the army command structure was again reorganised based on a system of operation headquarters.
New South Wales and Victoria (Northern and Eastern Commands) became the First Australian Army;
Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania (Southern Command) became the Second Australian Army.
Western Australia (Western Command) was replaced with 3 Australian Corps;
7MD was renamed Northern Territory Force;
and 8MD became New Guinea Force.
Each area was administered by a Line of Communications.
After the end of the Second World War the regional command structure was reinstated.
In 1950 South Australia and Tasmania were removed from the Southern Command and respectively formed the Central and Tasmania Commands.
