On 16th May 1975 amalgamations of police forces in Scotland took place, to mirror the re-organisation of Local Government which had occurred the year previous.
This series of mergers - "Regionalisation" - saw the 14 remaining County forces and 4 City forces merged into 8 Police Forces: These Police Forces in Scotland comprised of: Strathclyde Police, Dumfries & Galloway Constabulary, Lothian & Borders Police, Central Scotland Police, Fife Constabulary, Tayside Police, Grampian Police and Northern Constabulary.
The badge with Scottish Majestic Crown was worn from 1975 onwards.
With the 1975 regionalisation the opportunity was taken to review the Scottish Constabulary crest and make it more "up to date", including production of a fretted (cut-out) badge. The shape of Crown was also changed and is sometimes referred to as a "Queen's Crown", but it does not in fact resemble the St Edward's crown. It is actually a representation of the Majestic Crown of Scotland, part of the Royal Honours of Scotland, which also features on the cap badge of the recently created Royal Regiment of Scotland.
The Scottish Constabulary Crest badge is now worn by all police officers in Scotland.
Police Scotland (Poileas Alba), officially the Police Service of Scotland (Seirbheis Phoilis na h-Alba) is the national police force of Scotland. It was formed in 2013, through the merging of the eight regional police forces in Scotland, as well as the specialist services of the Scottish Police Services Authority, including the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency.
