Formed on 17 March 1911.
In action at Gallipoli, France and Egypt during World War One as part of the Auckland Mounted Rifle Regiment, which formed part of the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Brigade of the ANZAC Mounted Division in Sinai and Palestine 1916 - 1919.
Became the 3rd N.Z. Mounted Rifles (Auckland) in 1921. Later changed to Auckland (East Coast) Mounted Rifles.
Absorbed into the 1st Armoured Regiment on 29 March 1944.
Cap badge: A hawk with outspread wings, bearing a shield with the Southern Cross on breast, holding a taiaha and a tewhatewha in its claws. Representing 'a hawk on the alert, holding an ancient Maori weapon of battle in each claw.
Motto: Te kaahu mataara (Be like a hawk).
