Although the badge was instituted for the state of New South Wales (NSW) in 1876 the military only started to use it in 1881. Worn with scarlet cloth backing.
The badge of the Colony, and later the State of New South Wales consisting of a lion upon the cross of St George, with a star at each arm of the cross was granted on 4 July 1876.
The Cross of St George with the stars of the Southern Cross inside a Waratah wreath and ensigned with the Imperial Crown (State Crown, Queen Victoria Crown) made up the "Badge of the Colony" of NSW from 4 July 1876.
The military started to use it in 1881 and when they did it had a scarlet cloth backing.
