Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement within the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester in North West England.
In 1968 Salford City Police was merged with Manchester City Police to form Manchester and Salford Police.
Manchester and Salford Police lasted only six years, when in 1974 the Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester was created and with it the police name changed to Greater Manchester Police.
