Tudor Crown.
Star (pip) is used on rank epaulettes/shoulder boards/sliders from lieutenant to Lieutenant-General.
These size crowns are used from the rank of Captain to Lieutenant-General.
In 1881 lieutenants had their insignia changed to single pip (star) and moved to the shoulder.
In 1902 they received a second pip, the badge of rank which has been kept to the present.
The rank insignia in the British Army and Royal Marines, as well as many Commonwealth countries, is a crown above a four-pointed "Bath" star, also colloquially referred to as a "pip".
The crown has varied in the past with different monarchs; the current one being the Tudor Crown.
Most other Commonwealth countries use the same insignia, or with the state emblem replacing the crown.
